About the Contest

There are some very talented people writing original folk dances in traditional styles. Some of these individuals are long-time choreographers and some are new callers. This contest aims to feature them all.

Having a dance matched perfectly to a piece of music can result in a thrilling dance experience. It was common in the past to have specific dances written for specific tunes, and this continues to be popular in some traditions today. This contest aims to develop dances specifically written for music from the book Tales from the Red Book of Tunes.

This contest is one in a planned series. Wild Musette hopes to publish the full set of dances and tunes as a complete work.

Dance writers of all experience levels are encouraged to apply.

You can listen to the tunes on the individual story pages. Please note that these versions are played a little slow to aid musicians learning the tunes. They are normally played at dance tempo.

Support traditional music and dance. Join CDSS.
