Jack O-Dawn

Jack O'DawnLanier wants desperately to be accepted as a caller. Desperately.

Lanier smiled from her chair as the dance ended. Charlie Krutz was dipping Ann Granger. Charlie was always dipping Ann Granger. He was a good dipper, for sure. He squatted slowly, like he was sitting down, and held his arms around Ann’s lower back.

Lanier licked her lips.

Ann unfurled her thin arms over her head as she tilted back, her head almost touching the floor. For the first time, Lanier noticed just how inappropriate Ann’s dress was. It was solid indigo, and shiny.

Nobody wears shiny dresses to a contra dance.

Jack O’Dawn is a short story from the collection Tales from the Red Book of Tunes.
